I agree, and I think it's important to try to make the personal connection. In my experience, I've been contacted by a few sites to market music with them and the one that sent a personal email as opposed to a form email sticks out in my mind.

I've experienced that online and otherwise. It can be surprising how some businesses can still project a sense of community on the net or even in a large city with the right approach.

That's SO true. Customers can also tell whether you are a phony (just being polite in the hopes that they will buy something from you) or a genuinely caring person. They respond to the genuinely caring shop owner (or customer service person) over the phony types.

On the weekend I was impressed by my nephew in his new store. He was very friendly and professional to his customers and very helpful to a woman who was looking for another business. He let her use his phone book and phone to try to find where it was.

I think his next step will be to get a website up.
