When developing a website, what is the best way to make sure that your website is going to look like it should when displayed on smaller monitors?

I wonder if anyone designing images switches to smaller monitors, in a similar way that audio mixers use smaller speakers with flat response to get an idea what the product will sound like on different systems.

Is it a miscalculation when some sites open with an image that's just a little too wide, and a scrolling option appears?

You shouldn't use images that take up the whole size of the monitor. This is very bad for SEO.

The answer is quite technical, but if you want to design websites that look good on all monitor sizes, then consider CSS with a column layout that scales depending on the monitor size.

You can also specify different looks for your website for different browsers and monitors via javascript and CSS.

Use the current standard screen size, but I have to admit that I'm actually one who still uses 800x600 resolution, which means I end up scrolling. I hate that.

That's what mine is on my desktop computer. I wouldn't mind having a larger monitor, if only to better deal with open windows.

Does anyone here use more than one monitor?
