Karen, how do you gain fans without being too obtrusive on Facebook? My cousin is running for office and he wants a Facebook Fan Page, but I am afraid he might scare people away.

Setting up a Facebook Fan Page is not an intrusive act. Facebook Fan Pages are perfect examples of permission marketing: people "like" your page, subscribe to see updates in their Facebook Stream and if they decide that they don't like the updates, they can unsubscribe from the Facebook Fan Page.

Make sure that your wall posts (which appear in the stream) are interesting and try not to update your wall too frequently. You don't want your brothers updates dominating their news stream.

Also make it easy to connect to the Facebook Fan Page. Make sure that a link to the Facebook Fan Page is prominently positioned on your website and relevant marketing materials (newsletters, emailers, etc.).

Lorenz will be writing a couple of blog posts later today about Facebook marketing, you might want to have a look at those.
